FASI DANCE INTENSIVE

Another fabulous community project completed! Although there was sun and fun happenings all week long in the park, I wouldn't have changed my day plans. I spent 5 full long and exciting days at York University (July 9 - 13), implementing the dance intensive I created for FASI. My students were challenging themselves, moving out of their comfort zones and laughing from morning to night. Kind of the best.

During the summer, the Faculty of Fine Arts at York University offers high school students, undergrads, professionals, hobbyist and weekend artists to take part in intensive training at York University’s Keele Campus. This program, the FINE ART SUMMER INTENSIVE (FASI) was established in 2011 as a part of an AIF initiative, aiming to bring York University’s impressive facilities to York region and beyond.
Through these programs, participants take part in intense experiential learning at an accelerated rate within their chosen discipline: dance, design, film, music, theatre and visual arts.  The learning options are divided into a series of boot camps for high school students and workshops for everybody: students of all levels, emerging professionals and educators. FASI is also an unparalleled opportunity to mingle with artists of all experiences and backgrounds as you participate in engaging and thought-provoking workshops at one of Canada’s leading fine arts schools.
FASI’s intensives are directed specifically towards high school students, are 1-week long in length and are designed specifically for eager students considering university-level fine arts training upon completion of high school. These intensives end in a certificate that is a great item to include in portfolios and as a part of your audition package.

March Break Dance Camp
...............................................
With a great team and amazing students, GOTTA BREAK March Break Dance Camp has had two highly successful years. This past year the students raised money to offer scholarships for next year's intense week of programming - exploring the turntables, artistic graffiti, all styles of street dance, beat-boxing and much more.

Enough money was raised to provide two fortunate students with a full scholarship to next year's camp.  Workshops in the Jane/Finch area will seek two promising dancers and offer the opportunity to take part in the creative and educational week with some of Toronto's TOP industry professionals.  The mentioned scholarships were named after two AMAZING campers who helped raise the necessary funds:

Savi's 2012 March Break Camp Scholarship
Bianca's 2012 March Break Camp Scholarship

Congratulations & a never-ending THANK YOU to all participants, teachers, parents and volunteers!

We are always looking for more volunteers and support - feel free to contact me ;)

WE DID IT!

And the collaborations begin...

Spice Youth Toronto Community Initiative requested an experienced educator to offer hip hop choreography workshops to Metronome Records dance crew in Grenada.

We sent the talented Natasha Powell (Catalyst, DiscoLoveChild) to the rescue.  Providing the aspiring dancer/choreographers with invaluable knowledge surrounding the art of making dances for stage and competition.

Thank you to Natasha, Spice Youth and Metronome Records - see you again soon!
